FMCSA extends expired CDL, CLP, and medical certificate waivers. TSA extension for HM endorsements.

Extension Dates

The FMCSA has extended an existing waiver that gives CDL drivers additional time to renew their expired CDL’s and medical certificates due to the COVID-19 closures that affected DMV’s and medical practitioners nationwide.

CDL drivers now have until Dec 31, 2020 to renew any licenses that expired on or after March 1, 2020. This also extends Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) holders extending the validity period without requiring them to retake the general knowledge or endorsement tests. This applies to all States, CDL holders, CLP holders and interstate non-CDL commercial vehicle drivers. Most DMV’s are still requiring appointments, and the wait for appointments is over 2-3 months at many DMV locations. Take the time to read the appointment and choices for what you are attempting to do, because if the appointment description is not accurate it may not be honored. Example: VA DMV requires that if you are seeking HM endorsement renewal and need to take a test, you need to select the CDL General Knowledge testing. If you select HM fingerprinting, DMV may not allow you to test.

Medical Certificates that were valid on Feb 29, 2020, but expired before Jun 1, 2020 are extended until Oct 31, 2020. Medical Certificates that expired on or after Jun 1, 2020 are extended until Dec 31, 2020.

HM Endorsements have been extended to varying due dates depending on the state and whether they are open with or without appointments. You MUST check with your individual state DMV to obtain the HM endorsement extension information. CDL holders in states where you need to go to a TSA-approved facility for fingerprinting will need to plan ahead, as many of these facilities are still closed or are working on a limited basis. Call well in advance of your expiration date to set up an appointment.
