The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will hold its annual Brake Safety Week Aug 23 – 29, and RoadCheck 2020 is scheduled for Sep 9 – 11.
What actually occurs during these events?
Brake Safety Week is part of law enforcement’s effort to reduce brake-related crashes by conducting roadside inspections and identifying and removing unsafe commercial motor vehicles (CMV’s) from roadways. Brake and brake-related components will be the emphasis. Law enforcement agencies will also engage in outreach and awareness efforts to educate drivers, carriers, and mechanics on the importance of proper brake maintenance, operation, and performance.
RoadCheck 2020 is a 72-hour high volume, high visibility inspection and enforcement initiative when CVSA-certified inspectors in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. conduct CMV inspections at weigh or inspection stations, at designated fixed locations, or as part of roving mobile patrols. Level I inspections will primarily be conducted to include hazardous materials and cargo tanks if present. Level II and III inspections may be conducted instead, depending on weather conditions, available resources, or other factors. This year’s focus is on driver requirements.
If an inspector identifies critical inspection item violations that meet the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria during a vehicle inspection, the inspector will put the vehicle out of service, which means that the vehicle can not be driven until the critical violations are corrected.
